Magic: The Gathering's 2026 release schedule is one of the heaviest Universes Beyond years Wizards has run. Four major IP crossovers — TMNT, Marvel, The Hobbit, and Star Trek — sit alongside three core set releases. Lorwyn Eclipsed (January 23, 2026)

The year opened with a return to Lorwyn, one of Magic's more beloved planes — a world of Celtic-inspired fae, treefolk, and kithkin that originally appeared in 2007. Lorwyn Eclipsed picks up the story of the plane's transformation and introduced new cards for the classic Lorwyn creature types.

For the secondary market, Lorwyn returns historically perform well because the playerbase has been waiting for new versions of older Lorwyn cards. Secrets of Strixhaven (April 2026)

A return to the magical university plane that first appeared in 2021. Strixhaven has a dedicated fanbase among players who liked the college-based mechanical themes (the five colleges, each with distinct playstyles). Secrets of Strixhaven is expected to revisit the five colleges with new mechanics and expanded lore.

For the secondary market, Strixhaven returns appeal primarily to Commander players who enjoyed the first set's mechanics. Less crossover appeal than a UB set, but potentially stronger mechanical relevance to existing Commander archetypes.

Marvel Super Heroes (June 26, 2026)

This is the big one. Prerelease events start June 19.

Marvel is the largest IP crossover MTG has announced, and the secondary market implications dwarf any previous Universes Beyond set. Spider-Man, Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Black Panther, and a full roster of Marvel characters as MTG legendary creatures — all playable in Commander, Legacy, and Vintage. The set was previewed extensively at MagicCon events earlier this year and demand signals have been extremely strong.

From a collecting standpoint: the first-print foil treatments of the most iconic Marvel characters are likely to be this year's most sought-after MTG singles. Iron Man as a legendary artifact creature. Spider-Man with web-related mechanics. Captain America with shield mechanics. The crossover between Marvel fans and MTG collectors is enormous.

The Hobbit (August 14, 2026)

Prerelease August 7. The second major literary IP crossover of the year brings Tolkien to MTG — Bilbo, Gandalf, Thorin and the dwarves, Smaug, the Shire, the Lonely Mountain. Tolkien IP crossovers have a proven track record: the Lord of the Rings set from 2023 was one of the best-selling MTG products in recent memory, with some singles reaching $50–100+ for top cards.

The Hobbit is a narrower source text than Lord of the Rings, which may limit the breadth of legendary creatures available, but the core characters are iconic enough to carry strong demand. Smaug as a Dragon legendary is an obvious Commander hit.

The LOTR set created a meaningful secondary market that's still active — The One Ring in particular became one of the most expensive modern MTG cards. The Hobbit won't have an equivalent "only one exists" card, but expect the same collector enthusiasm for key characters.

Reality Fracture (October 2, 2026)

Prerelease September 25. The conclusion of the current Magic storyline — described as the conclusion of the current arc spanning several years of sets. Story-conclusion sets in MTG are historically significant for Planeswalker and character cards tied to the ongoing narrative.

For collectors: if beloved characters get their final card versions in Reality Fracture, those may carry long-term sentimental value. MTG players tend to attach to story characters, and a "final" version of a character has a different kind of appeal than a routine reprint.

Star Trek (2026, date TBA)

A third Universes Beyond crossover marking Star Trek's 60th anniversary. Full details haven't been confirmed but Wizards announced it for 2026. The Star Trek playerbase overlaps significantly with older MTG collectors — the IP skews toward the same demographic that's been playing Magic since the 90s.

The Marvel set is the single biggest secondary market event of the year. Buy singles, not sealed, on Marvel — the print runs on UB sets are large and foil box premiums typically deflate post-launch. The specific iconic character cards in premium foil treatments are what's worth targeting.

For the core set releases (Lorwyn Eclipsed, Strixhaven, Reality Fracture), the Commander staples are the collecting focus — same as any core set.
