Pokémon has a clear theme for 2026: Mega Evolution is back. The Mega Evolution mechanic — where Pokémon transform into powered-up forms during battle — dominated competitive play from 2014 to 2017 before being retired. The 2026 set schedule brings it back as a full-year focus, with four Mega Evolution sets, a standalone celebration release, and a 30th Anniversary set in September that's shaping up to be the standout product of the year.

Here's every confirmed release with dates.

Mega Evolution — Ascended Heroes (January 30, 2026)

The first Mega Evolution set of the year. Ascended Heroes introduced Mega Evolution ex cards and established the visual language for the rest of the year's releases — high-gloss Mega artwork, new M Energy mechanic integration, and a focus on fan-favorite Mega forms like Mega Charizard Y, Mega Blastoise, and Mega Venusaur.

Early secondary market prices showed strong demand for the full-art Mega ex cards. If you're collecting the Mega Evolution series, starting here makes sense — it's the foundation set and likely to hold the best long-term value of the four Mega sets.

Mega Evolution — Perfect Order (March 27, 2026)

The second set focuses on Psychic and Metal Mega forms. Perfect Order introduced Mega Mewtwo ex as the chase card — Mewtwo's Mega forms (both X and Y) have always carried strong collector demand, and the Perfect Order treatment is some of the best art in the series.

Booster boxes for Perfect Order settled around $208 after launch. For collectors focused on Psychic-type Pokémon or competitive players, this is the highest-value Mega set so far.

Mega Evolution — Rising Chaos (May 22, 2026)

The third set, releasing this month. Rising Chaos focuses on Dragon and Dark-type Mega forms. Mega Rayquaza — one of the most popular Mega designs — appears here as a full-art ex, which has driven significant pre-release interest.

If previous sets are the guide, pull rates on the chase Mega ex full-arts will be consistent with the rest of the series. Worth tracking secondary market prices in the week after release before buying singles.

Scryda's price tracking updates daily — check the Pokémon page once Rising Chaos hits to see which pulls are actually valuable versus which are wishful thinking.

First Partner Illustration Collection Series 2 (June 19, 2026)

A premium product rather than a main booster set. The First Partner Illustration Collections feature oversized illustration cards of starter Pokémon — Bulbasaur, Charmander, Squirtle and their evolutions — along with booster packs. Series 1 sold well and the illustration cards became sought-after display pieces.

This isn't a set you're completing. It's a display product. The collector value is in the oversized illustration cards, not the booster pulls.

Mega Evolution — Pitch Black (July 17, 2026)

The fourth main Mega Evolution set, headlined by Mega Darkrai ex — a new Mega form built for the TCG, since Darkrai never had one in the video games. Dark types carry a dedicated collector base, and a debut Mega design usually pulls more demand than a familiar reprint, so the Mega Darkrai ex full-arts are the ones to watch on release.

Full details in the Pokémon Pitch Black release breakdown, plus whether it's worth buying sealed or as singles.

30th Celebration (September 18, 2026)

This is the one to watch. Pokémon's 30th anniversary falls in 2026, and The Pokémon Company has confirmed a dedicated celebration set releasing September 18.

The set is all-foil with 6-card packs and introduces a new rarity type — details on the new rarity are still limited, but Pokémon's past anniversary sets (25th, VMAX Climax) have consistently been the highest-value products of their respective years. The all-foil treatment and new rarity format strongly suggest this will be the chase set of 2026.

This is worth watching for sealed product. If The Pokémon Company limits the print run as they've done with past celebration sets, sealed boxes from the first print run could appreciate. The Pokémon card investing guide covers how anniversary and special sets have historically performed.

Storm Emerald (~September 2026)

Storm Emerald is listed as a September 2026 release, likely timed alongside or just after the 30th Celebration set. It features Mega Rayquaza ex as the headline card — Rayquaza's popularity as a Pokémon design makes this a highly anticipated pull for a lot of collectors.

Specific release date and full card list haven't been confirmed. Worth tracking as details come in.

What to prioritize

If you're a collector buying selectively: the 30th Celebration set is the obvious pick for potential secondary market appreciation. For the Mega Evolution series, Mega Mewtwo ex from Perfect Order and Mega Rayquaza ex from Rising Chaos or Storm Emerald are the individual cards with the strongest collector demand.

If you're completing sets: the four Mega Evolution sets follow the same structure, making them good parallel completion projects. Singles for the chase cards will be cheaper than pulling them from packs — check TCGPlayer and PriceCharting for current prices before opening more boxes than you need.

FAQ

What is the best Pokémon TCG set to buy in 2026? For collector potential, the 30th Celebration set in September is the most anticipated. For competitive play, Rising Chaos and Pitch Black have the most relevant Mega Evolution cards. For pure collector demand, Mega Mewtwo ex from Perfect Order is the individual card with the strongest interest.

When is the Pokémon 30th Anniversary set releasing? September 18, 2026. It's an all-foil set with 6-card packs and a new rarity type. The Pokémon Company hasn't confirmed full details yet but it's expected to be the standout release of the year.

Are Mega Evolution cards worth collecting? The Mega Evolution ex full-arts from 2026 are new cards, so there's no long-term track record yet. Demand has been strong on the early sets. Whether they appreciate long-term depends partly on how The Pokémon Company handles reprints — watch the 30th Celebration set as a better bet for appreciation given its anniversary premium.
